Kite Surfing Port Stephens

I walk the dogs on Bagnalls Beach every day and in winds from the east around to the west Kite surfing is great here. It’s a great place to learn to kite surf or just have a play around. At Bagnalls Beach, in 2000, Australia’s first kite board event the Port Stephens “love in” was arranged with kite boarders from around Oz and New Zealand getting together for a low key cruisy event .

Fingal Bay Beach is good if winds are north east. Fingal Bay can be tricky, because the wind gets funnelled over the sand spit. This means that a slight change in direction causes a bit of havoc – it’s a long swim if you are kiting on the southern side of the sand spit.

In Anna Bay, One Mile Beach is nice if the wind is east (ie ESE to ENE). Birubi Beach if West wind, around to the South east. Birubi (the northern end) is great in a sou-west, which is often storm kiting. Safe and nice waves. The first world long distance event was run in Australia, from Stockton to Birubi Point, which was 30 km.

On a South to South West head across the harbour to Winda Woppa or Jimmy’s Beach for some wind/kite surfing action.
