Shoal Bay is a great location within Port Stephens to learn and experience Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP). For a tourist visiting Port Stephens, a day paddle boarding in Shoal Bay is an essential experience. Shoal Bay SUP wants to provide you with the ultimate Port Stephens Paddle Boarding experience.
They are ASI (Association of Surfing Instructors) are accredited instructors and will get you on your paddleboard and doing it the right way. All paddleboard hires come with an introductory lesson for beginners included in the hire fee. Your lesson is prior to your hire and is not included in your hire time allowing you to learn the basics of Stand Up Paddle boarding before you get out on the beautiful waters of Port Stephens.
SUP school is located on the beach 100m west of the Shoal Bay boat ramp, towards Tomaree Headland. This location has been especially chosen for our Port Stephens paddleboard school as it is less crowded and is the most sheltered part of shoal bay. The area around our site is also a designated 8 knot zone which ensures your paddle boarding experience isn’t disturbed by the waves or wake of jet skis or other boats travelling at speed.
The site is beautiful with relatively shallow depths of just 4-8m, so you have a very clear view of the seagrasses and the marine life below. You will see fish but also may see dolphins, turtles, cormorants and other types of wildlife.
Tours
Shoal Bay SUP also runs morning tours of Shoal Bay with one of our certified instructors. These tours run on demand at 7.45am , minimum number of 2 and limited to 6 participants.
Depending on weather and conditions paddlers will head west towards Halifax park or East towards the Fort remains that resides on Tomaree headland. During the paddle our instructor will help you with paddling technique, take photos and entertain you with our great local knowledge. At this time of the morning you are likely to see dolphins and other wildlife before shoal bay gets busy.
